Our Story
Hey there, we're Gareth and Rachel a husband-and-wife team who built The Fitness Dept around the two things we actually spend our lives doing: training, and being comfortable while we do it.
Fitness isn't a phase for us, and it isn't a brand strategy. It's the thing that's been in the background of every important moment we've had together. We want to keep ourselves fit and healthy for our kids.
The Fitness Dept started as a problem we kept running into ourselves. We wanted tees that we'd actually want to wear, soft enough to lounge in, designed well enough to leave the house in, and made for people who take training seriously without taking themselves too seriously. Most gym apparel is either over-designed performance gear or low-effort merch with a logo slapped on. We wanted the in-between. So we made it.
What we're about
Comfort first, always. If a tee isn't soft enough to wear on a rest day, we don't make it. Every shirt in our catalog is the kind we'd reach for ourselves on a Saturday morning. That's the test would we wear it when no one's looking.
Designed by people who actually train. We're not a marketing team imagining what a lifter would like. We are the lifter. Every design gets worn through a few real workouts before it goes on the site. If a print cracks, a neckline stretches, or the fit goes weird after a wash, we kill it.
Take it seriously, don't take yourself seriously. The training is real. The self-image stuff is optional. Most of our designs have a smirk somewhere in them, and that's on purpose.
Made carefully, in small runs. Every tee is printed in the USA, through partners in Florida and Texas, on soft ring-spun cotton. No 200-design content farms. We'd rather put out fewer things we actually stand behind.
What's next
Fitness is the first department. It won't be the last.
The plan is to slowly open new ones, we have The Escape Dept already launched for holiday inspiration but others will follow, each with the same idea behind it. A small, well-considered collection for one corner of the everyday.
Whether it's lifting, running, lounging on the couch after a long week, or all three, we're trying to make the stuff you'll actually reach for.
If that sounds like you, you're in the right place. Thanks for being here.
